In this post I’ll be talking about

  • The Warrior Forum
  • WarriorPlus
  • JVZoo and
  • Clickbank.

 

Which is a bit of a mix when related to the title of this post, but it does all tie in with what I’ll be discussing. I just thought I had better warn you!

Now I’ve been a member of the WarriorForum for a number of years ( You’ll see where I’ve posted things on there… ). It’s a great resource for anyone interested in Internet marketing, Website design and Programming stuff….I tend to jump in and answer programming related questions when and where I can offer anything sensible!

One of the “services” they provide is a Thread where you can Promote what they call “Warrior Special Offers”. These are where other Warrior Forum members that have a product or service can promote them to the other members at a reduced price to what they might be selling it for on their main websites… Hence the term “Special Offer”.

It’s a good proving ground if you are coming out with a new product and if done correctly it can be very lucrative for the Seller… But the products are primarily “Internet Marketing”  Related… It’s time that someone ( not looking at anyone…) should throw up something a little off topic… Hmmm.

Anyway, there is a service that was established called WarriorPlus.com in helping these sellers, Sell their products and also gave folk the facilities to become affiliates to promote the same products and services,while handling the payments etc.

It has a big product and affiliate base and there are some really great products and offers in there…

You can register and start looking for products to promote. When you find one you like, you need to submit a request to the Vendor ( product owner ) to get approval to promote it. Which in the majority of cases you get… But you must be a registered member of the WarriorForum to participate.

The WarriorPlus system has a few too many restrictions. So a prominent member or two on the WarriorForum have come up with a twist on what’s been available to date…

There are a few other similar services in the pipeline but right now….

JVZOO Is In Town!

JVZoo.com offers features like…

Sellers.

You can Promote Anything from Digital to Physical Products.

You can Promote Anywhere… It’s not tied directly to the WarriorForum, but you can submit WSO’s through it. The Warrior Forum charges $40 USD per listing on the Warrior Forum Site which is a separate fee from any third party service.

It’s Free for any Sellers wishing to list their products.

Download Security… Only those that actually purchase your products can get access to them via logging into the system using their username and password.

Sales Tracking – Each purchase is tracked through JVZoo so you get to see how your promotion is progressing. This also applies to affiliates.

You don’t need a website as you can create your Sales Page  via their WYSIWYG Editor. If you do choose this option, as opposed to using your own website, you will need to upload the product(s) to JVZoo.

You can create an affiliate program for your product.

If you have JV partners involved in your product, you can split the payment ( less the affiliate commission ) between up to 3 people. So they all get their cut automatically.

Affiliates

To become an affiliate you need to join as one (It’s a separate Registration) and any products you wish to promote requires that you ask the Seller for permission. Which is a click of a button and a response comes back Yeah or Nay! It’s usually Yes, unless you’ve done something to upset the seller!

This gives some control to the seller on who they allow to promote their products. Which depending upon your point of view could be a good or a bad thing! If you do want to become an affiliate, you do have to go through some extra hoops. Not sure on that one yet… Time will tell .

You get paid on your First Sale and all consequent sales… Unlike Clickbank that requires that you have 5 different payment sources before you are eligible to  “cash out”.

Once you make a Sale for a particular Vendor, the buyer is tagged to you for that Vendors future products…

As an Affiliate, you get paid when anyone you refer to the system makes an affiliate sale… ( which means if you decide to join via my links and become an affiliate, I will make a small commission on any affiliate sales that you make – end of disclosure… I like to be upfront about these things! )

It’s a whopping 10 cents per sale. But if you have a few affiliates under your belt then it can add up. This is something Clickbank offered in it’s early days to help boost it’s affiliate base.

Once you are signed up as an Affiliate or Seller, you become both! So you can both Sell and Promote.

Other Nice Features

The Affiliate program side to JVZoo is separate from the Product Purchase side. So Customers are separated from Affiliates and Sellers. The reason is that anyone who purchases can access their products instantly without having to deal with all that affiliate stuff pushed upon them.

All the products that are sold are accessible from the one place.  So when someone makes a purchase, they need to login to access it and they’ll get to see everything they ever purchased and have access to it… So no more – “Oh no I lost xxxx, where did I get it from…” It’ll become “Oh I got that via JVZoo – great, I can just log in and get it again”.

JVZoo is well on it’s way to making it’s mark upon the Internet. It has definitely made the entry into selling products using affiliate marketing a whole lot easier.

I’ve just been watching a replay of a webinar on “Dissecting A Profitable Affiliate Website” at Curtis Andrew’s InternetIncomeAcademy which is a part of the Learning Center material you get access to as a member. It’s just one of a few webinars he’s recorded on this one subject.

This is one of those programs I’ve seen over time but never paid much attention too it! Isn’t that always the case?

Who Says Traffic Exchanges Don’t Work?

Anyway I was surfing some of my favourite Traffic Exchanges to get some points up for another campaign I’ve started doing some promotion on for  a nice Time Management Product, Time Management is one of those things I still need to master with everything I need to do! And as is the way with Traffic Echanges, you get to see what others are promoting and this program popped up and grabbed my attention.

So I joined up as a Free Member to see what it’s all about!

And I had no real idea what 12SecondCommute was about. I was just curious! But I liked what I saw, and still do by the way.

Budget Entry Tools for any Marketer

Now I say Budget Entry as with most folk starting out, cash can be a bit hard to come by to risk on “some program”. So to see the offer to become a member of this for only $14 USD Per Month ( at the time of writing ) if you upgrade in the first 5 days of signing up, is a pretty good deal.

Especially when you see what it provides you with.

Now the average range of tools folk need to get started out is at a minimum of

  1. An Auto Responder System
  2. A Lead Capture Page system and
  3. Hosting , so you have somewhere to host it.

Ok so what 12SC gives you is an Auto Responder System which is laid out to be one of the most simple set ups I’ve seen. Some Auto Responder systems can leave you staring blankly at the page wondering what the goodness you have to do!

And if you just give me a few minutes I’ll fire up The GIMP and grab a screen shot for you…(Click , whiz, bang, Whirl………)

Ok, one Screen shot done. Now  I’m not sure you can glean too much from that, but it’s so nice to have everything laid out for you so you can quickly find what you are looking for.

You’ll also notice a Menu on the Left Hand Side of the above image, that shows a few nice features.

I’m going to Skip to the Capture Page Creator as it’s the second item on our list and  I’ve just had a play with and its nice and simple to use. It has a number of pre made templates, which are quite good, for you to choose from. There is also a range of Stock Photos on various subjects you can use as you wish, which is a nice touch.

Now with an Auto Responder and Lead Capture Page system you might need some hosting to put it all on. Well actual hosting isn’t included in the membership BUT the Lead Capture Pages are hosted for you. Which relieves you of the need to get web hosting, buy domain names and go through setting everything up. You can do that kind of thing later on… maybe! You might never have to!

Hosting is Offered as an extra at 3 different levels, which are all reasonably priced but nothing to “write home” about in comparison with other hosting services. Due to the hosting  being associated, with 12SC  if you are a bit new to all this hosting caper, they’ll probably sort you out. Not forgetting I can help out there as well!

Many Hosting Companies are able to drown you with ( and I mean that in a nice way – meaning they give you lots of info ) all the “how to’s” etc but let’s not get over our heads if you are just starting out.

So the fact you can set up your First Auto Responder and Lead Capture Page – have it hosted and up and running on the Traffic Exchanges in under a Day ( if you are completely new to all this ) or a few hours if you are an old hand, is impressive.

There are others out there that offer this level of service but I’d say this is a way above those I’ve been apart of in the past.

But there’s More.

The next piece of the puzzle is tracking your Page Views. It’s very important to see what your Lead Capture Pages are doing on what Exchanges. So there is an Ad Tracker as part of the system for your use. It’s an often “missed” item that is actually vital for you especially when you are starting out.

Playing Hit and Miss in the Dark might be fun for some, but when you are serious about building a business, you do need to be able to monitor your efforts and not fly blind.

There are a few more things but I do need to mention the Video Training. It’s no good having “stuff” that you don’t know how to use. And being able to learn how to ues these tools quickly and implement them is very very important!

There are also Conferences you can attend and learn more LIVE. This is always nice to have. So you won’t be left out in the cold.

Is there anything bad about this?

I might have liked to have some hosting included, but for the $14 USD per month (if you upgrade within 5 days – else it’s $29 per month – which is a nice incentive to jump in early and at that price it’s a bargain ) I don’t want a lot do I?

I’m paying $44 USD per Month for my Hosting,Auto Responder,Video Conferencing etc at GVO with all it’s whizzy things it has (it’s something to play with later on)  and $21.95 Per Month with another Hosting/Auto Responder Service I’m trying out.

So 12SC isn’t such a bad deal. Oh and not to forget an Auto Responder system can cost you at least $14 per month on it’s own! So with the Autoresponder – Lead Capture Page Creator including hosting and the Tracking System and all the other bits, for $14 USD per month it’s not too hard to see it’s very good value, along with the training that’s included.

It’s definitely a nice place to start from and even for someone like myself who has been around a little while, it’s got my vote and I’ll be giving it a further try out. Hey if it saves me time  – it’s got to be a good thing!

What to do next?

So what you can do is join it for Free and you can Stay as a Free member which lets you use all of the services I’ve mentioned in a limited capacity, but more than enough to get you started. So if you decide it is for you to continue with and upgrade in the first 5 days you get it all for $14 USD per month, else after that time it’s $29 USD per month.

Now as you can quit at any time, upgrading early makes it the obvious choice! It’s a nice little incentive they’ve included to help you decide to upgrade early, but it makes sense to if it’s something you are going to be using.

So you can Join 12SC for Free, try it and see if it’s for you.

Affiliate Program

Yes, this does have an affiliate program and yes I’ll earn a commission if you do join under me, which I would love you to do and help out where I can. So having got that out of the way, you too can also promote this program and earn a commission.

Now you might expect that at this extremely low monthly price that the Commission itself isn’t anything special at 35% for 1st level. And it isn’t, but it’s something.

The thing is, this program has a lot to offer folks like yourself, and it’s not an over priced program so you’d expect it would be attractive to folk and so it becomes a numbers game BUT it’s more important that you use the tools in the program to benefit your own business building efforts – that’s where the money is. Remember that it’s your Business <Insert Your Name Here> (Sorry that I don’t know your name).

The Affiliate commission associated with promoting this program is just some nice loose change :) Afterall,  everything helps.

I hope that gives you a little insight into how something like 12SC might benefit you and your business building efforts. There are a number of “great” services that cater for various peoples needs”out there” and this is one of them.

[UPDATE - 30 Dec 2011 ]  It would seem that the folk at 12SecondCommute don’t take too kindly to you  if you do not upgrade… I’ve just gone back to take another look at their offerings and was greeted with the message “Your Subscription has been expired”.

Now I’ve never come across this before and it’s certainly not a practice I would recommend or ever use… So what if you are a Free Member… What better way to have me upgrade if I’m still on the fence about handing over any money. The nice thing is that the folk at 12SecondCommute have made the decision for me…

Some folk say I suffer from madness a lot longer than 72 Hours…

But on a serious note, John and Dave are providing a lot of good content in this sale.  So much so, I’ve had to write about it to let you know of it.  [I'm not making a Dime in doing this. But it's too good to let it slip].

Product # 14 - Membership Master – So this fits in nicely with the Butterfly Marketing Secrets. Having a membership site and not knowing how to utilize it seems a bit silly. So this is a great resource. Written by Dave himself, you’ll be shown how to set up a membership site from scratch.

How to create and use PLR

Then there are a bunch of Products aimed at teaching you how to use PLR ( Private Label Rights )  and create your own products. Very useful for creating your Free products for List building and generating content for your Membership site ( if you start one ).

Product #4 – Your Software Website – This is one of Dave’s most popular products, with thousands of very happy customers!

This provides you with a way to create a  fully stocked software/affiliate website where you have total control via an admin panel. It is featured with inbuilt multiple earning methods making this  a great income stream for beginners and also advanced users.

Product #22 – John Thornhills Online Training – This was launched in 2009 and is still active and growing. To access it would normally cost you $497 but it’s part of the Madness. So this is where you get to ask John questions in the members only forum. A very good resource to have.

Now I’ve only touched on a few of the 22 available products.

As you can see, there is quite enough there to work with and get something happening.

The problem with the Internet is that there is way too much Information out there.

Why is that a Problem?

Well mainly because, you have to know what information you are looking for and it’s also very disorganized and can be really hard to find.

Plus there is that, huge, possible distraction of finding that “something else” that’s interesting and there’s a few hours down the drain.

“Well I am a little stuck”

So when you meet or catch up with someone on Skype, Facebook, Twitter or Sokule…. etc and you ask them what they are doing and how they are going, you may, more often than not, get the answer, “Well I’m a little stuck” or “I’m not sure what I am doing”…

So you have two choices.

  1. Sit down with them ( face to face or in Virtual Internet Land ) and explain what you can to them OR
  2. Offer them a resource they can find the answers and Still Stay in touch with you so you can  help them and others out with what you know at the same time!

Point 1.

Now I do a lot of “one on one” and while I don’t mind doing that, it does take time away from doing those “other things” I need to do.  I’m also more of a techie head and can bore you to death about that till the cows come home. While I know about marketing, I’m probably not the best teacher when it comes to that side of things.

Point 2.

Well I’ve had a few things to offer in regards to that, and while they are great, they may not be suitable as a starting place for someone starting out.

I’m always on the lookout for Quality Training Programs.

Now it would be very silly of me to make any claims of having found the Ultimate Training Program that you can have someone join and they’ll run off and start doing great things.

This is pretty close to that!

The Criteria

Criteria 1.

Advice via Ebooks and Videos on their own have some merit. But if there is No Way to ask questions and get answers to any issues that may arise… like “Yeah but FTP – I saw you doing that but it isn’t working for me…. What do I do”… You are Sunk!

  • Have access to as many Training Videos, guides, ebooks as possible AND be able to ask questions and get answers quickly!

Criteria 2.

Websites are essential when you are operating on the internet and this is probably the biggest sticking point that brings people to a screaming halt.

  • Clearly show, step by step,  how to create a website using Free Tools like Kompozer and also have the ability to quickly install a WordPress Website.

Criteria 3.

Websites need Hosting and that’s another sticking point.

  • Have a Simple Hosting Account creation facility included, which just requires you entering in the domain name and clicking the  “Create Account” button.
  • Simple One Click access to your websites Cpanel.

Criteria 4.

A Website needs to have a Domain Name and that has to be registered with a domain name registrar.

  • Show step by step how to register a Domain Name and where to get the best deals.

Criteria 5.

Now Building a website in itself can be pretty useless. You really need to have a purpose and know how to monetize it and have it setup to drag in the traffic.

  • Show, step by step how to Research an Idea, Find Keywords, Find related affiliate products, Create Content and Create the actual Website From Scratch to produce a profitable website.

Criteria 6.

There are many different Marketing Models you can implement so knowing what they are and the Wheres and Whys to use them, is very important.

  • Clearly explain all the various Marketing Methods along with the Pros and Cons of each. Also discuss the possibilities of combining various aspects of each.

Criteria 7.

All this Making Money Online is really no different to running a Business. It is a Job where you are the Boss and this is something the majority, never quite get!

  • Make it abundantly clear what the Big Picture is and how you should be thinking about what you are trying to achieve. This is probably the most important, misunderstood aspects of Making Money.

Criteria 8.

There is no question, Social Marketing, in regards to allowing people to easily communicate with each other, is paramount to producing a thriving community where people can easily network and share Ideas and services.

  • Have a system which allows people to easily interact with each other.

Criteria 9.

Forums are a great way to allow the sharing of Ideas and have ongoing Discussions

  • Have a Forum thats active.

Criteria 10.

With so many tools and resources, the actual website has to be intuitive and easy to navigate. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to Find Things.

  • Make the Website intuitive to use and easy to navigate.

I think I’ll stop there at 10.

On their own, these are just tools.

Having a swag of tools is just like having a well decked out Cruise Ship, with all the toys. You can have lots of fun on it, but without a Captain that knows what he’s doing, that ship aint going to go anywhere exciting!

Plus you need a superb crew specialized in looking after the guests on that Cruise ship.

Criteria 11.

Have an experienced Captain at the Helm and an exceptional crew.

This is where Curtis Andrew (Captain), Ryan Allaire and the IIA Team ( the crew) make the difference.

How Much is it to get a Ride on this “Cruise Ship”?

Read the pricing on the website and be sitting down when you do!

But PLEASE do not think for one moment that the Price is so low, that there will be any other charges.  There are no other charges to be a member!

Yes, you may need an Autoresponder Service and you will need to pay for your Domain Names registrations, but thats it.

There are NO OTO’s, upsells or sidesells. What you pay gets you all of the above and more. (Note:  When I joined I was expecting an OTO and was pleasantly surprised ).

So Why Recommend This?

A site like this has a ton of stuff and like similar sites, its easy to get lost… So there is a Step by Step Guide to follow to get you up and running on the Forum and get you using the Social System. Then you move on to the other training courses.

In the Training Modules the same applies. You are taken step by step and what you have done and where you are up to is recorded so you can continue on where you left off.

So a new member isn’t going to be scratching their head wondering what to do.

Now I could start out by saying – It’s only $1 for the 1st 7 Days then it’s only $27 USD per month from then on….. but that probably won’t grab your attention, although it should. Yes’ it’s cheap to try out and Yes it’s quite affordable as a Training system, but is it a good one?

Well I went ahead and spent my $1 to see what it is all about. I’m always looking for good training programs and having been a part of some and helped build one, I have to say this really did impress me and I’m still smiling.

Why?

Well the first thing that made me smile was, I was just about to click on the pay button and spend my $1 fearing I was going to be presented with a One Time Offer where you “Pay X more dollars and get this and get that….” What happened was a page came up explaining what an OTO ( One Time Offer ) is and how it can be used to help monetize your website and the explanation was impressive. As it’s a training membership they decided to have it as a lesson and Not a way to get more dollars out of you.

Then you get to the next page which talks about how they are going to do live classes on setting up a profitable website from scratch. “Oh no here comes an OTO” so I thought. But these guys are clever! Instead they throw about a few prices on how much it could cost you and state quite clearly that it’s for Free and included in the membership.

Now the fun begins

Most times when you land in one of these “Training Programs” members pages you sit back dazzled by everything that’s available. But fear not! There is a step by step guide to help get you started. One thing that stops people dead in their tracks is being swamped by “stuff” and not knowing what to do first.

One of the main benefits of this system is that it is very Community based. And you are guided on how to become involved in it. The Videos included in these steps are very clear although the 2nd one is rather long , over 42 minutes BUT it explains everything and is a must “View” if you are serious in using this system to it’s fullest.

You get shown how to put up your image on your profile so that others can find out about You. A Section for success stories. If you need help with a website, or want to call out to the other members to JV or whatever it is, you can do so via the Jobs Board. So if you have skills, you can advertise them. It’s all about helping each other out and getting paid.

If you are stuck on website building, which is a skill you might not have time to master, they have a Website Builder. And you are taught how to use that. Setting up a WordPress site is also taught.

OutSourcing can be scary

I’m actually very wary of outsourcing as I’ve had to “fix up” others sites / scripts freinds of mine have had done by outsourced services. Well you and I now have access to the same Website designing team as these guys use so at least you can have some confidence they’ll be good. It’s a nice option to have if you ever need it. I’m not sure of the pricing although from experience I know that you get what you pay for.

Webhosting Included!

Now I had to watch this part of the Video twice just to make sure I got this bit right. You enter in the domain you’ve just registered, click a button and Boom you are hosted. It’s all explained in the hosting section. Then you can login into that websites Cpanel and do all of the magic stuff. And this is part of the membership? It’s too cheap but it’s part of the membership. See I’m still reeling from just finding out about that. I have to check this out more….

Calendar and Todo Section

This is getting crazy! There is a section you can list your Tasks you need to do. Always a handy feature and again I’ve seen this service only available on systems costing a whole lot more…

I’ve not even got into the learning center yet.

Next Stop – Learn the Fundamentals

There is a section – as part of the initial steps – to go over and learn the Fundamentals. Something which we all love to skip But if you are serious at making an income online it is essential you learn the basics.

Then there is a whole bunch of  “Tutorials” and they are all available so you can look at it all. If you are new I’d recommend starting at the beginning. In fact it wouldn’t hurt to do that no matter what level you are at now. Repetition never hurt and you never know what little snippets you don’t know.

There is a Forum

Yep, every good website like this has a Forum. I personally hold Forums in high regard. In fact without Forums I’d not know what I know today. One bad thing about Forums is a lot of people have what I call – “Forum Fear”. Either because they are uncertain on how to use it and are afraid of “Stuffing up” or just don’t feel comfortable in asking a question in fear of others reacting in a “not nice” way. Or never getting an answer…

Don’t be scared of a Forum that is part of a a membership system like this. One of the things you can be assured of is that the other members are in the same boat. Those who do know the answers will give them and if anyone does act in a not so nice manner will be quickly dealt with.

No Question is a Dumb Question

Something I’ll say till the end of my days, and probably after that as well. As I teach “techy stuff” , it’s one thing I’m often reminding my students of… Never be scared to ask. There is nothing worse being stuck on something that someone else knows the answer to. Which is why I do what I do with my teaching as seeing others struggle on stuff I know drives me nuts and I’ll always try to get an answer to them. Which I can in IIA, in the forum!

Internet marketing is no different. A Dumb Question is a question not asked!

This is an Extremely well thought out Program.

What hasn’t it got? I come up with website ideas and can write PHP and design databases till I’m blue in the face, so I can really appreciate what’s been put together in InternetIncomeAcademy. If you don’t even do mildy well with the systems and the lessons provided only means you never spent anytime in going through the steps ( checklist ) and gone over the fundamentals.

I’ve just completed my profile and I’m about to make some entries in the blog you get as part of this system, so I’m off to get stuck into this.

$1 for 7 days….. I hope that now you’ll be prepared to drop your Dollar and check this out. Make sure you go through the Steps and complete each one… Which you can do in , oh about an hour I’d say… Not forgetting the 42 minute “this is an explanation of the world of IIA” Video. Yes I watched it all.

A funny thing happened to me on the way to my Inbox…

Well actually it happened when I got to my inbox and read this email regarding Mike Filsaime giving away the source code to his ButterFly Marketing Script.

First of all disbelief struck me. After all Mike’s been selling this script for sometime now and the people who bought it have done quite well with it.

The other reason disbelief flooded through my veins was the fact that our group at Internet Niche Lab have been developing a much smaller version of a membership script over the last few weeks and this drops in my lap!

You Can Modify this script and resell it!

That’s right, you can make it your own, promote it and sell it. Using the script itself to do it of course. Well that falls right up my alley.

I’m looking over this script!

I’ve installed the script and it worked straight out of the box as you would expect and I’m going over it to see what it has. Plus what we can do to improve/ add to it.

It’s Free So you can get your own!

Yep, you can go and grab it right now at ButterFlyOpenSource .

Is there a Catch?

You bet there is! But it is a clever one. Mike has started up a “Developers Network” which costs $200USD one time payment.

The reason behind this is simple, Mike will be building a community of developers and I’m guessing, any improvements will be available to the members.

For me, I’m going to sit back on that offer. First of all I’ve got to take a good look at this code.

But if you have a spare $200USD and want to join in on this community I’d strongly suggest that you do. As you’ll be getting fresh updates, to what was already an effective script, for a lot less than the >$1200 price tag it once had and you are looking for a good solid membership script. Then it’s a bargain.

Being able to be a part of a Community of a Software project that will greatly benefit you is a golden opportunity.

The Downside!

The downside is, if you do choose to resell the Free  script that is available, all support etc falls upon your shoulders.

Which is only fair. You get it for Free, it becomes your baby along with everything you need to do to support it.

You’d have to make your own changes or hire a programmer to do them. There are a few gremlins in the Free Version but it’s still quite useable.

This is another clever example of list building by giving away a very neat script with the aim of getting people to join the Developers Network.

So there is a lesson to be learned from all this. It’s a great way to get folk in front of his Developers Network and be inside where all the action is.

What’s Next?

Well I’m going to show this to the gang at Internet Niche Lab and see if we should persure using this script for what we want to do. And if you join us at Internet Niche Lab as a paid member, you’ll get the changes / modes we will be making,  plus you’ll have access to all the other useful scripts we develop.

In my PHP Classes, that is  what we do. We find a problem and write a script to solve it. The membership script being one of those. Now we have access to use the ButterFlyOpenSource script as a basis to solve this issue.

I’ll have a follow up to this as soon as I delve further into this amazing script!

New FTC laws will be in force from Dec 1st 2009. Now I am not a legal eagle so this is my own personal summary of what I understand these new laws to be.

They are regarding the requirement to disclose any financial gain that will be made by any person making a product or service review/endorsement. In our case, on a website platform. Again, that’s my gist of the situation and I hope it’s close to the mark.

Is it Fair?

I think so…

For one thing, it gives the “would be purchaser” something to ponder before splashing their cash on something based upon someones recommendation. ie If this person is going to make a commission from this review, is it the truth or are they just wanting to make a quick buck?

Personally, I only review things I would and do use myself. It’s only those things that are worthy of the words I spend time writing about it. I do know there are those who will write anything to make a quick buck. Well I’ve got my name and contact details out in front here, so if I’m giving glowing reviews on anything that is going to end up with someone making a purchase and being pissed off… then I aint going to be very popular. And I don’t like pissing anyone off. It’s just bad business. I’ve also been at the other end, having had both good and bad experiences.

So again, these new laws will help increase the protection of the buyer, by having any reviewer give a really honest review, dirt and all, so the potential buyer can make an informed purchase.

Well that’s the idea anyway, as to whether some dishonest people find a way to work this to their favor, only time will tell.

As long as the FTC doesn’t go too crazy and start turning peoples worlds upside down unfairly…. The word’s still getting out guys and we’re doing our best!

Who does this affect?

Anyone that has a website, blog etc that talks about other peoples stuff and has an affiliate link. So if you have an affiliate link, you stand to make a commission and you need to have this stated on your website to that effect. That’s in my own simple terms… Remember I’m not able to give legal advice and this is just my own opinion.

What can you do to implement this?

I did find this website…http://disclosurepolicy.org ( I will not make any financial gain if you click on that link and use the service! After all its FREE! )

While it’s probably a good start and better than nothing, I can’t say for sure that this will “please” the FTC but hey, we are trying!

Now how do I put this on a WordPress Site.

This is something I’m a little more qualified to talk about. But I must state that there will be other, maybe better, ways to do this. ( I love disclaimers too).

So I’ve already gone to http://disclosurepolicy.org and checked the boxes and answered the questions and generated the resulting disclosure statements…Now I have to  put it somewhere! Well that’s what you are wanting to know.. where do you put it?

I created a New Page, ( not a post ) but a New Page. Called it disclaimer – all lower case – and saved the generated text in it…

Beware of having Your Email Addresses on Your Websites!

One thing and this is a major peeve I have with Email Addresses on anything out there that can be scanned by the “aholes that use our emails addresses for evil“. Never Ever have your email address written in it’s natural form. Now at the site http://disclosurepolicy.org, you will be asked to enter your address to add into the disclosure statement. This is solely up to you, but personally, I put mine in BUT I altered it a wee bit…

Never put your HTML Email Address on Your Site

Here’s what you DONT DO – Never Write your email address in it’s Pure HTML Form.

For Example ( and I hope this is a really bogus email address… ) thorax1099@theweebitinthemiddleofinsects1099.com

That’s a No No! You could use thorax1099 ‘AT’ theweebitinthemiddleofinsects1099 ‘DOT’ com with a note ( replace the words in ” with their symbols ). For one thing, this kind of email address has to be typed in… If it’s read ( scanned ) the “aholes that use our emails addresses for evil” software has to do some work… I’m not saying that their software does or doesn’t but it if it hinders them, I’m all for it…

There is way number 2 which looks more appealing. In the actual HTML – you can replace the ‘@’ with the characters ;#064 so you’d write thorax1099;#064theweebitinthemiddleofinsects1099.com

There are also javascript type solutions, but if your visitor has javascript disabled, well it’s not going to show up correctly at all!

I’ll just step off my High Horse on email addresses…..

Next…

Ok, so we have our disclosure statement, we’ve put it in a new page called disclosure ( you can call it what you like but I’m guessing it’s more search engine friendly ) and what about Where will this page live… Well I made my about me page the “parent” to the disclosure page. For no real reason but to tie it to something… I’m also going to be adding a “privacy” and “terms and conditions” pages as well. So they’ll be hanging off the about me page…. Which means – the “about me” page is the Parent. You’ll see this in your WordPress Admin area when you create this new disclosure page.

I Want it in the Footer!

Well it’s where all this kind of stuff should live! Isn’t it? Now this involves a bit of “tinkering” with your worpdress files. While not for the feint hearted, hopefully I’ll explain this well enough that you won’t be too scared to attempt this if you are a bit hesitant to start altering things… Hey, this was made for changing…So let’s change it…

Now this depends upon the theme you are using ( I’ll write more on the details later, I’m thinking a video is required… Have you joined my news letter yet? ) Most Themes have a footer.php file. You can access this in your WordPress Admin section and if you go to…

Appearance -> Edit  and select the footer.php file. ( yep this needs some pictures at least <insert images here…> ) and I added in this line…

Now my Footer looks like this….

The WordPress Function get_page_by_path(‘/about/disclosure’) gives us the advantage of not needing to know anything more than where the pages lives. Remembering that I created the disclosure page with the about page being the parent. So there is no need to worry about the websites URL and under what path the blog is located. On this site, wordpress is installed under http://www.timbrownlaw.com/blog and I don’t need to worry about that as the function get’s than information internally when wordpress was installed.

I’ve had to put in the path msyelf. Now my wordpress installation hangs of the folder called blog ( yours might be different.) It may even be straight from the public_html folder in which case you will only need “/about/disclosure”.

Try it and see. It’ll get you going.

Just note that the disclosure page will be a menu item under your about page menu item if you have that functionality on your menus. That’s not a bad thing! We had set the about page to be the parent to the disclosure page. You can use the very same methods to add in any other pages you wish… for example a “privacy” and “terms and conditions” page. I would recommend you name the “terms and conditions page” with hyphens between the words – never use spaces ( although WordPress will fix it if you do use spaces ) . So you’ll end up with terms-and-condtions.

No this isn’t going to be some ranting about everything I’m doing and everything that makes me what I am….

A New Social Network Adventure

Nope, MyLot is a new discovery of mine – prompted by my good friend Lou Roggio. It’s rather interesting, in fact it could very addictive and for a lot of Good Reasons.

I think Community is a more appropriate term for MyLot

You can open Discussions, you can start up your own little blogs, you can ask for help on getting articles done etc (you have to pay of course). But it’s number one feature as I see it is it’s ability to expose you to a whole new world. I say a Whole New World as you are going to read and participate in a very broad range of topics.

It’s much much better than FaceBook and MySpace.

It’s a very well laid out, easy to use system and in my opinion it’s going to outshine the likes of Facebook and MySpace.

It’s quite “busy” as there are a lot of things you do – useful things. Umm there is NO Farmville and all thoes games that have polluted facebook. I do hope MyLot does not go down the same path.

So join and open up a discussion on your Niche!

It’s as simple as joining up and starting a discussion on your Niche. What better way to start building interest in your Business.

Make sure it’s a fair discussion.

Those that haunt MyLot are either going to love you if you play fair or if you choose the path of being pushy with your business you’ll be promptly dispatched. There’s no other way to say it.

It’s just a fun place.

I’ve been in there for about 10 minutes and I’ve learnt alot, about stuff I’d never get to read anywhere else. It’s very interesting just to see what people are finding popular topics. Could be an idea for a Niche waiting for you in there. I know I’m scouring.
