There is a new course that has been released that is called “Make WordPress Easy”.

This be being touted as the best WordPress “How To” ever released and this is not just coming from it’s Creator “Ori Bengal”.

I’ll add in Ori’s own website where he raves on about lots of stuff…

Why do Folk Say – Google Loves WordPress????

What WordPress does do…

What a WordPress Website does do is offer a format that Search Engines – like Google – do like.

It’s the Format… It’s nothing to do with WordPress…

Ok I’m probably sounding a bit pedantic ( possibly annoyingly fussy), but you can create any website with anything that follows the “rules” and have the Search Engines “love” your site just as much!

What WordPress does do is help… and I’ll say it again… help… you by giving you a platform that allows you to easily create a site that could be “interesting” and “noteworthy” to any search engine.

So what are the “things” any website needs to have?

At the end of the day, your goal is to make it “easy” for a search engine to be able to gather as much information as it can from your website. Search Engines do not have ESP, and those, like Google, are aware of certain “tricks” some folk try to pull.

I know that while most of the search engines are automated in their “searching of sites” on the internet… don’t be so sure that there are not “real humans” also reviewing websites…

The job of the search engine ( the good ones ) is to provide, relevent, interesting and informative websites regarding the topic or subject that the “searcher” is looking for…

So all you have to do is to provide that content… There’s nothing mysterious or secret about that!

Content. Not just any ole rehashed rubbish. It must be Relevent, Interesting content. ( not something I can always claim fame to ).

A Site Title.

A Site Description.

H1 Tags in your pages Title. Just like a Document has a title…

Keywords. This is a contentious issue. Some advocate the “Stuffing” of “keywords” ( keywords are the words or sentences that folk will type into a search engine when they are looking for something). My view is that, if you write naturally about any topic, the keywords will appear naturally.

I’m not huge on writing anything for the sake of being able to place these “treasured” keywords wrapped with junk text…

Titles in Links. These “add” information regarding the nature of the link.

Alt tags in images. Again, these add information about the image. Search Engines cant see your images or figure out what they are about. So this let’s you tell the search engines what the image is about.

Good Content. Did I mention that all ready?

Helpful pages to have… The Privacy, Terms and Conditions and Contact pages etc… These just give more credence to the site. You’ll see these at the bottom of most “good” websites. Their purpose is to give more information. On this site ( at the time of writing ) I’ve just got a Disclosure Page on this site.

So basically it’s the use of everything that you can do to assist the search engines in determining what your site, pages etc are all about. You help them and they’ll help you get found. Simple!

And WordPress makes this easier to do.

So the statement regarding WordPress and other website building scripts should be… “WordPress helps you build websites that Google will be able to figure out what your site is all about IF you do things correctly!”

Ok it’s a bit more long winded than the original statement, but it’s closer to what the actual situation is.

I’ve only touched on the basics here.

WordPress “out of the box” is missing one crucial item that you should have. The ability to add a title, descriptions and keywords for each of your posts…

So to fix that, there is a plugin called “All In One SEO” that gives you the ability to add these details.

I’ve found from experience, just how vital this one plugin is. Without it, I had ranked on page 2 of google for some keyword BUT the description google had found didn’t have anything to do whatsover with the post it had found. Yikes!!!!

So I quickly went back and found that I hadn’t filled in the fields that the “All in One SEO” plugin gives you… Once I filled those in and Google took another look, it got it right!

That’s an example of what happens when you make it Hard for Google as opposed to making it easier for Google to find out exactly what your post is actually about. Which makes everyone happy.

So there is some food for thought.

How does it work?

A Client Creates a Design Contest in one of the areas mentioned above, and sets a fixed price… Then the Designers come along ( it could be you! ) and submit their design concepts. The Client can give feedback to the designers to help them create the Design they are looking for and at the end… The Client chooses the Winning Design and the Designer gets paid the Set Payment.

Now the Payments are not Shabby… It’s not like getting a Logo designed for $5 from fiverr.com. Just as a quick guide – Logos are around the $100-500 range, Website templates are in excess of $1000. So if you are pretty handy with Graphics, see a Contest that interests you, you might win and earn a few dollars…

It seems an interesting way to get into doing commercial graphics if you are starting out.. Well it’s one of many options available to you.

If You are Someone in need of High Quality Graphics…

maybe for your New Business Website, Stationary etc, it seems a very good place to get your job done. Plus you get to work with the Designers and you have final say on what you’ll accept. For the Client, this works out much better than having to look for someone by making a bid at an Outsourcing Site where you have to Select One and hope for the best…

Anyway, It’s one of those sites I’ll be keeping in mind for any future projects or in the case where someone I know needs some work done, or if I know some Budding Graphic Designers…

A Great WP Plugin – Broken Link Checker

Why is it so great?

It’s free and installable direct from your WP Dashboard. Just go to the plugins section and look for “Broken link checker” and install and activate it. It does say it’s for WP 3.2 and it’s running happily on 3.1.4 at the time of writing.

Once I ran it, it did find a gaggle (technical term for “lots”) of broken links. Some of those I had either misspelled or had just got them plain wrong or they were in fact links to pages that no longer existed.

So that puts it right up there in the “It saved my butt” category! How many folk ended up getting splattered by visiting these dead links in the hope of gaining some further knowledge I wonder?? I mean that’s why you are here isn’t it? Ending up at a “Dead Link” isn’t fun for anyone and real embarrassing for myself.

Now it finds these links whether they are in Posts. Pages or Comments. When you find these lil pesky links, you have a few choices. You can either Edit them, in the case you mistyped something, or delete them, which it does where ever they appear. One other nice feature is that it puts a “strike through” on any dead links it finds on your site.

One “Danger” option is while it will let you delete any comments with the “dead link”,it will delete any “item” which I am guessing is the actual Post or Page. Well that’s what it sounds like so I’ve been a little reluctant to try that option out yet. It will tell you – when you hover over the “Trash” link under the Sources if it’s a Comment or an Item.

The user Interface

I’m a big fan of well written user interfaces and I like the way this one works. It’s very intuitive as it operates the same way as the rest of the WP site in regards to the options appearing for edit, delete etc as you hover over the entry. So once you are in it trying to get things sorted out, if you are familiar with WP, then you’ll feel right at home. So to the Author – WhiteShadow – nice job!

In the Dashboard, down the bottom of the screen, it shows how many broken links, total links and unique links its found. Which is useful.

It’s got a great range of Settings

This makes it fall into the “It’s been well thought out” bumping it right up in the making it even more useful category.

There are 4 tabs where you can tell it what kinds of links to check for. Where to look for them. What links to ignore. It even goes into having a timeout and an allowable Server Load setting so you don’t go stalling the Webserver and getting a smack on the hand from your Hosting Company.

This is something you can set up and have it running every few days if you wish and it’ll email you about any links it finds broken. So you can set the time period if you wish ( by default it’s every 72 hours).

This is nice… You can change the CSS for Broken and Removed Links in the settings if you want to change the default appearance of these.

What would be nice as added features.

The links to the sites are live and clickable, so it’s an easy matter to go and visit them but it would be nice if that happened in a new tab. That would be easily done by adding in the target =”_blank” in the link or having it as a setting so you can choose. While not a huge issue, its just one of those things I notice!

Here’s a slightly big one in regards to user “niceness”. It would be nice if it gave you a chance by way of a popup or something to ask you “Are you sure?” before you committed to your choice of action. Once you select your desired option, once you click on it, it’s going to happen. There’s no way back if you find yourself leaping out of your seat screaming “Oh No… I didn’t want to do that…” So make sure you are certain of what you are doing.

A word of caution

With any plugin you add to your site, make sure it works and doesn’t break things. I have no idea what other plugins you are running and of course I cannot say it’ll work with any other plugins you might have. So with any changes you make to your site, please check that it works.

While it works for me… there might be something that will make it go wobbly, so use at your own discretion.

Otherwise, until I find it doing something silly on my sites, I’m delighted with it.

What Do You Recommend to People who are Struggling Online?

Why is that a Problem?

Well mainly because, you have to know what information you are looking for and it’s also very disorganized and can be really hard to find.

Plus there is that, huge, possible distraction of finding that “something else” that’s interesting and there’s a few hours down the drain.

“Well I am a little stuck”

So when you meet or catch up with someone on Skype, Facebook, Twitter or Sokule…. etc and you ask them what they are doing and how they are going, you may, more often than not, get the answer, “Well I’m a little stuck” or “I’m not sure what I am doing”…

So you have two choices.

Sit down with them ( face to face or in Virtual Internet Land ) and explain what you can to them OR
Offer them a resource they can find the answers and Still Stay in touch with you so you can help them and others out with what you know at the same time!

Point 1.

Now I do a lot of “one on one” and while I don’t mind doing that, it does take time away from doing those “other things” I need to do. I’m also more of a techie head and can bore you to death about that till the cows come home. While I know about marketing, I’m probably not the best teacher when it comes to that side of things.

Point 2.

Well I’ve had a few things to offer in regards to that, and while they are great, they may not be suitable as a starting place for someone starting out.

I’m always on the lookout for Quality Training Programs.

Now it would be very silly of me to make any claims of having found the Ultimate Training Program that you can have someone join and they’ll run off and start doing great things.

This is pretty close to that!

The Criteria

Criteria 1.

Advice via Ebooks and Videos on their own have some merit. But if there is No Way to ask questions and get answers to any issues that may arise… like “Yeah but FTP – I saw you doing that but it isn’t working for me…. What do I do”… You are Sunk!

Have access to as many Training Videos, guides, ebooks as possible AND be able to ask questions and get answers quickly!

Criteria 2.

Websites are essential when you are operating on the internet and this is probably the biggest sticking point that brings people to a screaming halt.

Clearly show, step by step, how to create a website using Free Tools like Kompozer and also have the ability to quickly install a WordPress Website.

Criteria 3.

Websites need Hosting and that’s another sticking point.

Have a Simple Hosting Account creation facility included, which just requires you entering in the domain name and clicking the “Create Account” button.
Simple One Click access to your websites Cpanel.

Criteria 4.

A Website needs to have a Domain Name and that has to be registered with a domain name registrar.

Show step by step how to register a Domain Name and where to get the best deals.

Criteria 5.

Now Building a website in itself can be pretty useless. You really need to have a purpose and know how to monetize it and have it setup to drag in the traffic.

Show, step by step how to Research an Idea, Find Keywords, Find related affiliate products, Create Content and Create the actual Website From Scratch to produce a profitable website.

Criteria 6.

There are many different Marketing Models you can implement so knowing what they are and the Wheres and Whys to use them, is very important.

Clearly explain all the various Marketing Methods along with the Pros and Cons of each. Also discuss the possibilities of combining various aspects of each.

Criteria 7.

All this Making Money Online is really no different to running a Business. It is a Job where you are the Boss and this is something the majority, never quite get!

Make it abundantly clear what the Big Picture is and how you should be thinking about what you are trying to achieve. This is probably the most important, misunderstood aspects of Making Money.

Criteria 8.

There is no question, Social Marketing, in regards to allowing people to easily communicate with each other, is paramount to producing a thriving community where people can easily network and share Ideas and services.

Have a system which allows people to easily interact with each other.

Criteria 9.

Forums are a great way to allow the sharing of Ideas and have ongoing Discussions

Have a Forum thats active.

Criteria 10.

With so many tools and resources, the actual website has to be intuitive and easy to navigate. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to Find Things.

Make the Website intuitive to use and easy to navigate.

I think I’ll stop there at 10.

On their own, these are just tools.

Having a swag of tools is just like having a well decked out Cruise Ship, with all the toys. You can have lots of fun on it, but without a Captain that knows what he’s doing, that ship aint going to go anywhere exciting!

Plus you need a superb crew specialized in looking after the guests on that Cruise ship.

Criteria 11.

Have an experienced Captain at the Helm and an exceptional crew.

So a new member isn’t going to be scratching their head wondering what to do.

One Last Thing to Consider.

This is a story about WordPress 3, that had me head scratching till a little after 3 [am that is, EST Time...] ( sing that to the theme of the Beverly Hillbillies, it’s fun, I promise!) I’ll be hearing banjos playing all night now!

Ok so what inspired that moment of madness, well I’ve been pluging away writing WP Plugins like a mad thing and going great guns till I decided I had best stick to the rules and use the $wpdb->prepare Statement. After all it takes care of all the escaping and htmlspecialchars ( I think ) which keeps my code nice and clean and gives me a warm fuzzy feeling my SQL is a little more protected. ( You do , do those things don’t you?) MySQL Injections are much nastier than the real kind of injections.

Traps for Old Players.

So the database stuff was working like a bought one, using a looong sprintf affair using ( the field names have been changed and reduced in number to protect the innocent!)

$sql = sprintf(“INSERT INTO %s (id,name,event) values (%d,’%s’,'%s’) ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE name = %s, event =%s”,

$table_name,

$row['id'],$row['name'],$row['event'],

$row['name'],$row['event']);

The ID is defined as UNIQUE so if I try to insert the same ID, it will perform an Update Instead. A really nice feature , Well I think it is! Don’t you just love Databases?

And if you squirt that into a $wpdb->query($sql); all is happy.

But replace the sprintf with a $wpdb->prepare and……

What the prepare does is it wraps the strings in single quotes as defined by the presence of the %s (string place holder) , which is good ( so you can remove them or leave them in – the wp code figures that out.) But it also wraps the table_name in single quotes. Now apparently mysql gags on this Well it chokes really badly. Instead, you can just toss in the tables variable name without any fuss as the function does all the magic ( or is it because I’m using double quotes…. I’m not sure – it’s late!)

WordPress simply smiles if you have dodgey SQL statements.

So the quotes around the table name was the first thing… Now WordPress ( by default) simply smiles at you if your SQL has errors and shows you nothing. You only know there’s a problem on inspecting your tables only to see that things aint quite right. So I found a function that lets you “Turn on” Error Reporting for just these occassions.

Actually I had resorted to using the GUI Mysql Browser tool ( which I love ) and figured out the ‘table_name’ as being the issue.

$wpdb->print_errors() cause a slight moment of panic.

The function is $wpdb->print_errors() which you can use after a call to $wpdb->show_errors(). This will print any errors generated on the last mysql call. Basically it’s a wrapper for the standard mysql_error() function. And it worked… it was whinging ( in it’s own uninformative way ) that something was wrong. That was the apostrophes around the table_name being the culprit.

So I was happy and I ran my plugin again to update it’s database only to be greeted by a bunch ( cause I was looping ) of the following message. WordPress database error: [] in the plugin page accompanied by the SQL statement it was using. Which at about 3am has you wondering “what the….”. Anyway I dove into the file – wp-db.php in the includes folder and saw what was going on. Actually nothing…. This $wpdb->print_errors() prints a response if there is an error or not. At first the word BUG lept into my sleepy mind but on further thought it’s just showing what’s going on, Error or Not.

So it will display the “Error” with the SQL statement.
The WordPress database error: [] is a Non Error cause it’s lil square brackets are empty.

And it’s not a WordPress 3.0 thing, it’s been there a while, it’s just I’ve never used it before.

Well that’s for another post -plus it’s got a bit further along than 3am so I had best be going.

WordPress has come a long way over the years.

It’s now at the point where it’s simple to knock up a website in a matter of moments, literally.

It sure beats my old templating system I developed and teach in my classes. Well the templating system is a good introduction to using PHP at least and has some applications for small sites.

It’s probably how WordPress started out. I’m just way too late…

Anyway, WordPress has now got my full attention to the point that I’m learning how to throw in all my past PHP code snippets into it via Plugins. Which at the beginning, like most things, has a wee learning curve. But there is a lot of good information available on the internet to help out.

I’ve even gone and bought a domain name and have been slowly building the website up. It’s a place where I’ll be providing all my new found WordPress Knowledge and providing links back to some good sources.

Which leads me to a dilemma. I’ve got this website where I ramble on about things. I’ve also got http://www.LookingOverMyShoulder.com which I use as my base site for my teaching ( Note to self: It needs a major revamp – hey install WordPress on it – what a great idea! ).

And the tutorial site for WordPress is http://www.AdvancedWordpressTutorials.com. So my thinking is to stick with these sites and use them as they do cover some of the different areas I’m working in.

I use these sites to “record” what I’ve learned so I guess they work like my own personal reference sites. Sites where I can collect all the vast resources available and hopefully merge them into a central location. Something to consider when you create your own websites. And don’t go pillaging from other sites. Link to them and provide any extra useful information to make things clearer if need be.

So when I go – “umm where did I see that” I can go to one of my sites and dig up the information. Plus it helps you build your website.

I’m just creating a new plugin – my first – at the request of a mate that wanted a new plugin. So I’m busy learning up on the ins and outs of WordPress. The plugin – actually works – but there is a bit more to do on it. Umm , yeah I am being a bit vague on what it is!

Still, with all the little snippets I’ve developed for my hand coded sites, it’ll be a great adventure to turn them into plugins and add their abilities to WordPress. Why reinvent the wheel? It’s better just to make new ones!
